Scenarios to 2025: Emerging Futures

the-futureThe 2009 World Economic Forum in Davos featured the release of a series of reports on scenarios to 2025. I consider the period leading up to 2025 to be of great significance for humankind’s challenge to achieve a globally sustainable way of life and welcome intiatives that consider 2025 an important milestone.

Scenario planning and explorations of the future are great tools for charting a person’s or organization’s optimal course of action, particularly in a world characterized by rapid and unprecendented change. Scenario planning tools help to develop a shared vision on a way forward, enabling us to shape the future in a direction determined by choice.

The World Economic Forum’s website oberves that ”… scenario-building provides a non-threatening context in which to bring together diverse stakeholders with conflicting worldviews and to establish a common language. This in turn can translate into a shared sense of vision, and can help to initiate multi-stakeholder actions aimed at bringing into existence the kind of future that participants consider desirable.”

outbreak online

Back in 2006, Planet2025 initiated a series of online and face to face strategic explorations of the future as part of its accelerated learning initiative for a globally sustainable lifestyle. A scenario brief which aggregated multiple perspectives and studies on alternative pathways to the future served to engage participants in these explorations.

Heralding what was ahead, many of the challenges, issues, and possible solutions presented in our have since become prominent headlines in the news papers, titles of books and publications, the subject of documentaries and movies, leading topics at international fora and organizations, and drivers of policy and decision making processes.

Now in early 2009, with a new US president at the helm, seems to be a good moment in time to highlight a number of recent publications and books (many referencing 2025) that  that any serious explorer, visonary or shaper of a sustainable future should take note of.

Happy reading and send me your comments and reflections!

Thanks for this report on the Davos 2025 scenarios. Our Task has been collecting outlook reports to 2030 by the large international organizations (20 of them), summarizing them, and putting the summaries on our web site at http://www.ourtask.org/pub/earthoutlook.html. Check it out and maybe write something about it. We have also collected and summarized fifty global sustainable development strategies http://www.ourtask.org/pub/index.html and have written the first edition of your Youth Earth Plan http://www.ourtask.org/pub/yep.html. Best Jerry
